Pediatric Dentistry in Edison, NJ
At Dentistry for Kids, we believe that a child’s first dental experiences set the tone for a lifetime of healthy habits. That’s why we create a warm, welcoming environment where kids can feel safe, supported, and even excited to visit the dentist.
We use simple, friendly language to explain each step of care—and always go at your child’s pace to make sure they feel comfortable and confident from the moment they arrive.
When to Schedule the First Visit
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth erupting. Early visits help us monitor development, build trust, and establish strong oral hygiene routines from the start.
What to Expect as Teeth Come In
Most children’s baby teeth begin to appear between 6–12 months of age and continue erupting until about age 3. As new teeth come in, it’s common for gums to feel tender or sore. You can help soothe discomfort by gently rubbing your child’s gums with a clean finger or a cool, damp cloth—or by offering a teething ring.
Baby teeth play an essential role in your child’s development by helping with speech, chewing, and guiding permanent teeth into place. These teeth typically fall out between ages 6 and 12, making way for the adult teeth that will last a lifetime.

Building Healthy Habits at Home
As soon as your child’s first tooth appears, it’s time to start brushing twice a day. Here’s what we recommend:
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for children under age 3 (unless advised otherwise).
- For kids 3 and older, use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
- Encourage your child to watch and mimic your brushing routine—it’s one of the best ways to build lifelong habits.
- Start flossing as soon as any two teeth are touching.
- Limit sugary foods and drinks, and encourage water between meals.
If you spot white lines, discoloration, or signs of decay, contact us right away.
Preventing Cavities with Routine Checkups
Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood conditions—but it’s also highly preventable. Regular dental visits help us catch issues early and provide preventive care to keep your child’s smile strong.
We recommend:
- Dental cleanings and checkups every six months
- Fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel and prevent decay
- Dental sealants to protect hard-to-brush grooves in the back teeth
Sealants can last several years and are checked at each visit to ensure they remain effective.
