Gentle Tooth Extractions for Children in Edison, NJ
While we always aim to preserve your child’s natural teeth, there are times when a tooth needs to be removed to protect their overall oral health.
At Dentistry for Kids, we make extractions as gentle and stress-free as possible—whether it’s a stubborn baby tooth, a tooth with advanced decay, or part of an orthodontic treatment plan.
When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?
Some common reasons children may need an extraction include:
- A baby tooth that won’t fall out on its own
- A damaged or decayed tooth beyond repair
- Crowding that interferes with orthodontic treatment
- Infection or risk to nearby teeth and jaw
- Wisdom teeth concerns (for older children or teens)
We’ll always explain the reason for an extraction and discuss the best approach for your child’s comfort and care.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Tooth extractions are typically quick and performed right in our office. Your child’s dentist will gently loosen the tooth from the socket using careful, kid-friendly techniques. If needed, we may recommend nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or sedation to help your child feel more relaxed.
We’ll talk through everything ahead of time so you and your child feel prepared and supported.

Post-Extraction Care Tips
After an extraction, healing usually happens quickly—but it’s important to follow a few simple steps at home:
- Avoid drinking from a straw for 24 hours
- No rinsing or spitting forcefully
- Stick to soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, and smoothies
- Avoid sharp or crunchy foods (like popcorn or pretzels)
- Use children’s Tylenol® or Advil® if needed for discomfort
- Apply a cold cloth or ice pack to reduce swelling
